Planning the project

The working rule across the industry is about 1 kW of heater output for every 1.3 to 1.5 cubic metres of room volume, assuming an insulated room lined entirely in wood. Multiply internal length by width by height, divide by 1.4, and you have the starting kilowatt figure.

Then correct for surfaces that are not insulated wood. Every square metre of glass, tile, stone, or bare masonry behaves like roughly 1.2 cubic metres of extra room volume. A 8 m3 cabin with a 2 m2 glass front therefore sizes as about 10.4 m3, which is the difference between a 6 kW and an 8 kW heater — and the most common sizing mistake on glass-front cabins.

Capacity in people is a consequence of volume, not an input to it. Two cabins seating four people can need different heaters if one has a full glass wall and the other does not.

Corrected volume means the measured room volume plus about 1.2 m3 for each square metre of glass, tile, or uninsulated surface. Supply current is shown for 240 V single-phase; 400 V three-phase markets draw less per leg and usually require three-phase from 8 kW upward.

What size sauna heater do I need?

Take the internal volume in cubic metres and divide by about 1.4 to get the kilowatts. Add roughly 1.2 m3 to the volume for every square metre of glass or tile before you divide. A 2.0 x 2.0 x 2.1 m cabin is 8.4 m3, so about 6 kW — but the same cabin with a 2 m2 glass door and window sizes as 10.8 m3 and needs 8 kW.

Can sauna heater size be selected only by person capacity?

No. Capacity is a result of room volume, and volume is what the heater actually has to heat. Two four-person cabins can need different heaters if one has a glass wall and the other is fully lined in wood.

Does an outdoor cabin need a bigger heater than an indoor one?

Usually yes, but through insulation rather than through a separate outdoor rule. An outdoor cabin loses heat to wind and cold air, so if its wall build-up is thin, size up one step. A well-insulated outdoor cabin in a mild climate can use the same heater as the indoor equivalent.
